About Kasama ware

It is made from Kasama clay, which is fine-grained, sticky, and easy to mold. The granite contains a lot of iron, and if it is fired as it is, it will have a reddish-black finish. It features a thin and light texture.

technique and development

Kasama ware began in the middle of the Edo period. A prominent figure in Hakoda Village (now Hakoda Village, Kasama City) invited potters from Shigaraki to build a kiln, and at that time, miscellaneous wares such as earthenware jars and mortars were baked. Due to its proximity to Edo, many kitchen utensils were produced, and the number of engineers increased, making it famous as a production area.

Kasama ware today

In recent years, Kasama has made a shift from rough pottery for kitchens to craft pottery, and has created a variety of works that make use of the free style of Kasama ware, from daily necessities to highly artistic flower vases and tea utensils.
