This piece was made around 1948. It is a work by Hamada Shoji, known as "Hamada's Aka-e". A variety of patterns are depicted succinctly by the artist's flexible brushwork. Shoji introduced the technique of overglaze enamels, which had never been used in Mashiko before, and produced a number of outstanding works in this style.
