There are areas on the body of the vessel that are not decorated with inlays, and these areas are painted with floral and other motifs in red. The coloured glazed windows encased in Jomon inlay contrast beautifully with the austere Jomon inlay base, making this one of the most popular of Shimaoka's works. The red painting also follows the technique of the master Shoji Hamada.
