This work was made around 1968. In addition to the salt glaze* technique, in which rock salt is thrown into the kiln to form a film on the surface, Shoji began to use pigments such as cobalt and manganese to add color, as well as cresting and body straps, to give his works a richer and more dynamic expression. *Salt glaze is a technique that the glaze is applied at the end of a firing (about 1,300°C), when it compounds with the silicic acid content of the clay. It is a technique originating in Germany.
