This piece has a neat appearance combined with a Jomon inlay design. Combined with the beautiful blue colour of the cobalt, it is one of Simaoka's most famous works. Shimaoka inherited the salt glaze* technique, which his master Shoji Hamada developed and perfected in a number of works. This piece has a different appearance to his master's salt glaze. *Salt glaze is a technique that the glaze is applied at the end of a firing (about 1,300°C), when it compounds with the silicic acid content of the clay. It is a technique originating in Germany.
