A sake flask and cup set from Shin-emon Kiln. The classic gourd-shaped flask is finished with a crystalline glaze that evokes the depths of the sea. The appearance of the crystals varies from piece to piece, depending on when the piece is made and the conditions in the kiln.

Bleu de roi, or "king's blue," is a deep blue made with cobalt oxide pigment. It was produced at the royal manufactory established in Sèvres, between Paris and Versailles, with funding from Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour, and others. At the time, it was a restricted color that others were not permitted to use. Crystalline glazing is a technique that creates beautiful crystal patterns within the glaze. Shin-emon Kiln has mastered this technique, overcoming its technical challenges to create works of art suitable for everyday use. Sprayed with blue across the entire surface, the crystals of Ruri Suiteki evoke the profound blue of the sea. When tea or sake is poured in, they shimmer with a mysterious light, suggesting the beauty and elegance of gemstones.

The soft curves of the gourd shape sit comfortably in the hand, bringing a quiet elegance to sake gatherings.
